Head Coach of Cambridge Rugby’s 1923s side Ben Scully has revealed his line-up who are busy preparing to face the Army Rugby Union side at Ellgia Fields this evening.

An invitational fixture, the match provides a perfect opportunity for Scully to test his side, put a marker in the sand and to give the players a taste of high-level competition.

“We are excited for the challenge that this fixture will provide for the 1923 Development Squad. We are still growing the programme, but this hopefully provides us with a blueprint moving forward … high profile midweek fixtures that the boys will enjoy playing in and learn a lot from.”

The Championship Development team, named the ‘1923s’ in recognition of the club’s centenary year, is aimed at young aspirational players across Eastern Counties who are working towards a Championship and/or National One playing standard. Scully’s squad for this evening will not only give the nod to 1923s players but also sees appearances from several rising Colts and 1st XV players returning to the fold.

“The squad is a really exciting mix of young talent and 1st XV experience, and the younger lads will learn a huge amount from playing alongside the 1st XV boys in today’s match.”

“The team sheet is a great advert for what we ultimately want the 1923 Development Squad to be, a pathway for homegrown talent to get the opportunity to learn within a Championship environment, and eventually go on to play Championship rugby.”

The match will see the return of live men’s rugby to Ellgia Fields after the Championship side’s two-week break. With a 19:45 kick off under the lights of Ellgia Fields and free entry to all, the clash is not one to be missed.
