Richie Williams has announced his squad for Cambridge’s trip to the Wirral to face Caldy. The Blood & Sand beat tomorrow’s hosts at Grantchester Road back in January by 33 points to 14 – one of just two victories in the Championship this season.

Here’s Richie:

“We know what’s coming. Caldy are a proud rugby club. Most of the Wirral come out to support them when they play at home and there’s a big crowd and plenty of atmosphere at Paton Field. They go well at home – most of the ‘big’ results they’ve had in the Championship have been at home. They’ve beaten Ealing, Cornish Pirates, Coventry…they’ve had some big scalps. I think for us not having played for a couple of weeks we’re well prepared.

“We know what to expect from Caldy but ultimately for us it’ll be about growing that first 50 or so minutes in Penzance and trying time elevate that a bit more. And if we can do that, with the players we’ve got back from injury I think we’ve got the game to give Caldy some problems this weekend.

“Joe Green is back which is a huge boost for us- he’ll be in the squad – he’s not played since the Ealing game. We’ve missed his energy about the place. He’s really important to our attacking game and he works really hard for us. Nahum Merigan passed a fitness test at Bath this week after his dead leg against Pirates so he’ll be back too.

“Other than Kieran Frost, who’s 50-50, we’ve pretty much got a fully fit squad to choose from. There are two games left, two more opportunities to put in positive performances, and take those into the off season, pre season and next season as well.

“I want to see a consistent performance this weekend – if we can bottle up that energy, that enthusiasm, that fight, we had down in Penzance we’ll have a really good afternoon. I think for us that’s been one of the biggest challenges – consistently producing that sort of performance. That’ll be the message this week – we need to get back psychologically to that level we had against Pirates – and it’ll be two evenly matched sides going into this weekend’s game”.
