“We’re very much embracing the challenge afforded by champions-elect Ealing Trailfinders this weekend. We had a chastening experience at their place back in December – we want to show everyone we are much, much better than that scoreline. As ever our minimum requirement – whatever the opposition – is the try bonus point, and to put in a very competitive performance. We just fell short of both at Nottingham on Easter Sunday – a really good first half where with a little more luck we could have gone in leading but a proper ‘game of two halves’ where we went off plan in the second forty and paid the price.
“We had a week off ahead of preparing for Ealing this week – there were some tired bodies and we needed to refocus ahead of a tough run-in to the end of the season. We have been really sharp at times since Christmas, have scored a lot of tries, and looked good in attack. We’ll need to be absolutely the best version of ourselves this Saturday – despite Ealing’s position at the top of the table, they’ve lost three games this season, twice to Doncaster Knights and once on their own patch to Bedford Blues, who are our next opponents here. We go to London Scottish next week. The Championship is relentless and we want to show well between now and the end of the season.
The Blood & Sand welcome back centre Matty Williams – Matt Hema rotates to the bench. Northampton trio Will Glister, Reuben Logan and Oli Scola are all back at Saints – Ewan Baker keeps his place at full back. Joe Tarrant remains at fly half with Louis Grimoldby out. Billy Walker is injured so Jake Bridges starts in the front row. Cam Murphy is on the bench. Jared Cardew is still returning to full fitness and Ollie Betteridge misses out this week.
