Cambridge Rugby are making history once again next month, as they prepare for their first ever double header match day, with both the men’s and women’s senior sides in action in one day.

Saturday 9th March sees the Blood and Sand welcome both Bedford Blues Men’s and Women’s sides to Ellgia Fields with a 12pm kick off for the Women’s friendly preceding the 3pm kick off for the men, who face off in the return leg of the Championship competition.

Men’s Head Coach Richie Williams commented around the excitement that this day will bring for both sides;

“We are really excited about playing Bedford at home, we love playing against the local teams and we hope this will attract one of, if not the biggest crowds of the season. To be able to do that as a double header with the women playing too is something we’ve not done before so a little bit of history will be made there.”

Cambridge women’s side have had a momentous season so far, winning the last three of their matches in succession;

“The women are currently top of their league and going for promotion so it will be a really good opportunity for them to play against Bedford who are in the league above. It will be a nice test to see how much they’ve developed this season.”

Meanwhile in their first ever season in the second tier of English rugby, the men’s side are hopeful that their recent momentum will continue into this clash;

“On the men’s side, we were really competitive for the first 45 minutes when we played at Goldington Road before Christmas but then Bedford ran away with the game in the last 20-25 minutes. So for us it will be great to host them especially as its the first time we’ve played them at home for a number of seasons. I know its the game the players have probably been looking forward to the most this season so i really hope we can give a good account of ourselves and get something from that game.”

“We’ve developed massively since the last time that we played them and have started to get more points from games now, so are very hopeful that come 9th March and with a big home crowd behind us that it will generate a lot of energy and buzz and get both sides over the line that day.”
