Cambridge Rugby Head Coach Richie Williams has revealed his 23-man side who are busy preparing to face Cornish Pirates on Saturday afternoon.

Championship action returns to Ellgia Fields for the first time this year, after a three-week hiatus over the festive period. Returning home after claiming a historical last gasp win over London Scottish on 23 December, the Blood and Sand are looking to go one step further and claim their first Championship win in at home this weekend.

Williams reflected on an elated end to a historical year for his side;

“I was delighted to finish off 2023 in style, as we finally delivered one of our key objectives and achieved our maiden win in the Championship. The outcome and more importantly the performance against London Scottish, was the direct result of many months of hard work.

“I was so proud of how the players have been able to learn from our previous losses and be able to translate some of those lessons into a really disciplined performance.”

In a nail-biting finish that saw both sides level with just one kick to win, fly-half Jamie Benson sealed the deal, slotting the ball through the posts to secure the victory;

“The last four or five minutes really showcased all the qualities that we have been referencing over the last 6 months; the powerful set piece, continuity in attack, taking opportunities in the opposition 22 were all evident, as was the desire to keep fighting until the end.

“I now hope that that win can instil some more self-belief and confidence and act as a catalyst for more positive results moving forwards.”

Williams is now looking ahead to this weekend’s round nine clash with south-west giants Cornish Pirates;

“We have another good opportunity this Saturday as we host Cornish Pirates, a team that beat us by 50 points earlier in the season during the Premiership Cup. They are an experienced and battle-hardened championship outfit, who are well coached.  Everyone is desperate to build on our last performance and more importantly, put together a committed and disciplined performance at home.”

Of his squad selection this week, Williams commented on the upcoming notable achievement for one of his line-up;

“We are selecting from a very similar squad who played against London Scottish this week. We welcome back both Geordie Irvine and Kieran Verden from Northampton Saints and Bath respectively and we will also see the return of Jared Cardew to the squad. A huge congratulations also goes out to Matt Dawson who will be making his 50th appearance for the club on Saturday.”
