New Cambridge wing Joe Hill got off to a try-scoring start at Colchester last weekend, running in the sixth touchdown of the afternoon in a 38-12 victory. Today, he starts at Goldington Road against his former employers, Bedford Blues…
“It was great fun, it was great being out there with the boys. We got off all the rust and stuff and we played some great rugby, we got in front after the first two minutes and we started opening up, playing to our edges and had some fun out there. I got a try at the end, which I was very happy about. I was looking for it all game. But yeah, it was just fun to be back out there with the boys and I can see us doing very well this season.
“I love this backline, it’s a young backline, and we’re merging together very well. We’ve only been together five weeks, and yet we’re picking holes, finding gaps, and spreading the ball. There weren’t too many handling errors, I thought we executed really well, and that showed on the pitch with the score, and at the end, yeah, it was wicked. It was good fun out there.
“Ruaridh Dawson and Luke Bouchier already look like a very, very solid half-back combination. They’ve both got massive boots on them. And yeah, the connection with Dawson and with Bouchier, I’m looking to get some cross-field kicks off them. We’ll learn more about each other every training session and today, especially, showed that is starting to pay off. We’ll look to see where we can expose some teams.
“I’m honestly buzzing for the Bedford game, I made some great mates down there last year, I didn’t have the season I wanted or planned for but coming here it would be good to go against my good mates and yeah just see what I can do and show them what I’ve got. I played against Cambridge when Blues only just won last year – so I knew what I was moving to, I knew Cambridge were a great side, and I knew Newbs was a great coach.
“I was excited by some of the players I saw when I played against them so yeah I was always looking for it to be the right move for me and I’m really happy to be here. My main aim for the season? Get a load of tries and put my team in the best position possible going into the games ahead.”
