The club are delighted to reveal that George Bretag-Norris will once again lead the 1st XV into their maiden season in the Championship.
Amassing well over 150 appearances for the blood and sand, the Australian Second Row has become a figurehead and key component in the recent on field success of Cambridge Rugby’s 1st XV squad. His durability and level of consistency have been two of his main characteristics during his tenure at the club, highlights which include leading the side to a National One Championship in 2022/23.
Head Coach Richie Williams spoke about George and his choice to have him lead the side once again;
“George has developed into a strong and empathetic leader, who always has the players best interests at heart.
“George has a number of the qualities that we look for in our players and is always looking to refine his leadership style. I have been impressed with how the captaincy has brought the best out of him as a player and he is now playing some of his best rugby of his career.
“I look forward to seeing him grow ever further as a leader and player.”
George is excited to be back in the fold and to skipper the group through a new era for the club;
“I feel honoured to be leading this special group of players during an important year in the club’s history.
I believe that I have the respect of both the players and management alike to help drive our ambitions of continuing to write our own narrative as a group.”
Joined by fellow stalwarts of Cambridge, the support of George’s leadership group will prove pivotal to the team’s success this season;
“I am fortunate to be surrounded by other senior leaders who make my job easier, including Ben Adams and Matt Hema.”
Looking ahead, George’s final comments paid tribute to the importance the club has had to him and his family over the years;
“Since moving to the UK, Cambridge Rugby has played a huge part in mine and my families lives and I hope that I will continue to play a high level of rugby as I aim to reach the personal milestone of playing 200 games for the 1st XV”.
You can witness George in action with his team on Saturday 26th August as they step out for the first time at home to face Chinnor in a pre-season clash.
