Towering Irish lock Jake McCay is the latest to join the fray, signing for Cambridge after a spell at Les Abelles Rugby in Spain’s top flight, the División de Honor. The former Ulster Academy man has swapped Valencia for a shot at Champ Rugby – Jake started his rugby career at Omagh Academy before going through the Ulster Schools system at U16, U17 and U18 levels and playing with distinction for Queen’s University, Belfast, for 5 years, during which time he also spent a year in Spain’s top flight whilst on placement. His physicality earned him Ulster A recognition and he’ll lend his height and power to the Champ battles ahead.
Jake’s ready for the fight: “I’m really excited to have signed for Cambridge. It’s a great opportunity to challenge myself in a new environment, and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team. It’s a real privilege to be joining this great Club and I know the standards here are going to be high. I can’t wait to get started, push myself, and play my part in something special this season”.
Head Coach Craig Newby says, “Jake is a product of Ulster’s strong rugby Academy and is an athletic, mobile second row. His aerial skillset is a strong feature and I look forward to working with Jake across the season to develop him further”.
