STAR PLAYER – Ed Crossland LEEDS TYKES
Cambridge were very much the architects of their own downfall at Grantchester Road as Leeds scored 57 points for the second week running to take the win back to Yorkshire.
The home line out took a while to function, and much of the good work done by the Blood & Sand was undone by careless handling errors. Tykes presented a relatively formidable defence, which proved to be the best form of attack after hooker Jude White opened the scoring for the hosts, converted by Luke Bouchier. A driving maul from the visitors – touched down by Adam Brown and converted by Ed Crossland – levelled the scores.
Three more tries from Leeds by Kieran Davies, Charlie Venables, and Matt Salisbury, all converted, had them in the box seat before the break, with a penalty goal from Crossland for good measure – and that despite Cambridge tries from replacement hooker Harry Nicholls and full back Eli Caven, for 19-31 at half time.
Jake McCay smashed over for the hosts’ try bonus point – but four more in the second half from Tykes, mostly fashioned from errors, more than won the day as Davies again, George Bolam, Ben Bailey and Ben Turpin made hay in the sunshine. Callum Smyth’s late consolation try wasn’t even that as Cambridge continue to search for that elusive victory.
