A dominant display from Cambridge Women saw them secure a commanding 64–0 victory away at St Neots, as the visitors produced one of their most complete performances of the season in their eighth fixture of the campaign.
From the opening whistle, Cambridge imposed themselves physically and territorially. Early pressure quickly translated into points when Sarah Hamaia dotted down within the first few minutes to set the tone for what became a relentless first-half onslaught.
Cambridge barely left the opposition half, with sustained phases and dominant carries pinning the hosts deep inside their own 22. Mez Wynne added her fourth try of the season but the league’s leading points scorer, Kate Willis, took control of the scoreboard. Displaying clinical finishing, Kate crossed four times and calmly added five conversions to send Cambridge into the break with a commanding 40–0 lead.
Sarah was at the heart of much of Cambridge’s attacking creativity and was unfortunate not to add another after a sharp line break was called back due to an injury stoppage. Up front, Ashleigh produced enormous carries and dominant tackles throughout the half, narrowly missing out on forward of the match honours, which instead went to Vera Schaefer for her relentless defensive work rate and powerful ball carrying. In truth, the award could have gone to almost any member of the Cambridge pack, whose collective work rate, physicality, and determination ensured the entire half was played almost exclusively in opposition territory.
With several players rested in the opening half following the midweek 88s fixture against the university, Cambridge introduced fresh energy after the interval. Allegra Sloot, operating at number eight rather than her usual fly-half role, impressed with aggressive contributions in both attack and defence. At the back, Molly Henthorn resumed her “brick wall” duties at full-back, while Lily Nicol, Alex Perez Pion, and Phoebe Peacock added renewed intensity to the forward pack. A special mention also goes to Avi Browning for an impressive performance on her Cambridge debut. Coming on on the wing, she brought sharp pace and awareness, looking particularly assured in defence while adding energy to the backline.
Alex was rewarded for her powerful running with two well-earned tries, repeatedly breaking through contact. Rhi Davies, moved from her starting role at full-back to the wing, showed sharp finishing to add another, before Jaz Reed burst through several defenders to complete the scoring. Kate and Amy added a conversion apiece to cap a dominant afternoon.
Credit must go to St Neots Rugby Club Women, who remained aggressive in defence and continued to compete until the final whistle despite sustained pressure.
For Cambridge, it was a performance built on physical dominance, depth across the squad, and clinical finishing: momentum we will look to carry into the end of the season. With 4 matches still to play and Bletchley also performing well, promotion isn’t guaranteed for a few more weeks, so there is still everything to play for.
