Cambridge’s Women are back in pre season training! Led from the front by husband and wife duo, head coach Isa Sloot, who came through the Cambridge Youth system and senior sides, and last year’s captain Allegra, they’re aiming to go into battle and go one better than last season’s second place in NTC 1. After a promotion season and just being pipped to the post last time out, the aim is to finish top of the pile this term.
Allegra’s excited by their summer recruitment ” We’ve successful added to the squad via Pride and our Insta – they’ve proved to be the major means for us getting our message out – and we’re looking at around 40 players at the moment, plus a list of others we’re expecting to join us. We’re a fun bunch but we’re also determined to improve and be super-competitve. We’ll fight every inch of the way to achieve this. Our socials are legendary too – and we’re very much looking forward to continuing to add to our numbers over the summer and the season ahead. Tonight’s about getting everyone back together and re-connecting and getting fitter. Our aim next season is promotion and the fixtures will be out shortly so we’ll know what we’re dealing with”.
With the support of sponsors Malco Freight, Cambridge Women’s section has underdone significant growth over the last few seasons. A measure of their upward trajectory is how close they ran Bedford Blues Women – one tier above Cambridge -at the end of last term – the sides were separated by a single score in a pulsating precursor to the 1st XV Champ Rugby fixture. Isa feels the squad is improving every year and they want to take it forward again. ” We are still looking for an extra coach, specifically a backs coach. I’ve got some ‘guest’ coaches lined up but we’re actively looking to recruit someone permanent. We’re going to add more shape, more structure and I think it’ll give us an edge and make us more combative in the new season”.
If you want to be part of Cambridge Women’s upward journey, just come along to training at Ellgia Fields on Mondays and Wednesdays from 18.45-20.30 – and don’t forget the Thursday evening summer Touch Rugby sessions on Parker’s Piece in the centre of Cambridge which get underway at 6pm!
