Match report from today Cambridge Women put in a dominant home performance in freezing conditions to defeat Olney, running in five unanswered tries and holding the visitors scoreless in a match that finished early.
With a strong wind blowing against Cambridge in the first half and frozen fingers making handling difficult, the opening exchanges were scrappy. Olney started well and showed early strength at the scrum, but were unable to turn this into points thanks to resolute Cambridge defence.
The breakthrough came through flanker Margaux, who crossed for the first try after a sustained period of powerful forward carries. Captain Molly Henthorn followed with a brilliant 50-metre run through the defence, before centre Jaz Reed added a stunning 80-metre solo effort to give Cambridge a 15–0 half-time lead, despite playing into the wind.
Cambridge’s defence was outstanding throughout, with Alex producing a series of superb tackles. Abbie, named Forward of the Match, was tireless in contact alongside Margaux, setting the tone up front.
Early in the second half, fly-half Amy Jin scored an opportunistic try, and winger Leane Ickes completed the scoring with a powerful driving run from deep, breaking through defenders over half the length of the pitch.
Olney, travelling with just 13 players and matching numbers throughout, struggled to escape their own half in the second period. With Cambridge firmly in control and maintaining intense defensive pressure, the match was brought to a close at 60 minutes.
A disciplined, committed performance ensured a well-deserved clean sheet for Cambridge. Georgia Grand, named Back of the Match, was influential in keeping the backline organised as Cambridge saw out a comprehensive win.
